Touro's Lander College for Women
School of Health Sciences of Touro University
“Being able to help people daily is something that gets me out of bed every morning!” says Tamar Mermelstein, a physician assistant (PA) who received her master’s from School of Health Sciences of Touro University and her undergrad degree from Touro’s Lander College for Women.
It was during her undergrad years that Tamar felt a pull towards the sciences and realized that becoming a PA was a perfect fit, allowing her to interact with people of different backgrounds while also helping them live a better life. And Touro was the perfect place to prepare for her future. “Touro is geared towards helping religious women succeed in the workplace and beyond,” she says. “I truly believe that Touro undergrad was a huge driving factor for me being able to thrive in my master’s program. My experience with the master’s program was very positive. The classes are rigorous, but the teachers are there to help every step of the way and you can see the invested interest in their students’ growth.”
Currently a dermatology PA at Metropolitan Dermatology, Tamar has a diverse role. Her job consists of everything from treating patients suffering from acne to performing surgery to remove skin cancer. She treats over 30 patients a day and seeing how she is improving their lives makes the job even more rewarding. “My favorite part about being a PA is when I get patient feedback on how I am helping them lead a better life,” she says.
