Regina Davydova at Montefiore hospital

Regina Davydova had a lifelong dream of becoming a surgeon, but she had one problem: How would she balance such a demanding career with her desire for a family? When her best friend suggested she look into becoming a physician assistant (PA), Regina had her answer. “When I learned I could practice medicine and operate without having to sacrifice starting a family, I knew without a doubt that was the career for me!”

As she considered which PA program to attend, School of Health Sciences of Touro University stood out for several reasons. First, she appreciated Touro’s flexibility, including multiple locations and evening class options, which allowed her to continue to work. She also appreciated that the school aligned with her Jewish faith. “Since Touro observes all religious holidays, I never had to compromise my studies or my religious beliefs.”

The PA program at Touro was intense and rigorous, and Regina describes it as “medical school and residency compressed into 2.5 years!” She appreciated the dedication of the faculty who prepared her to succeed as a practicing PA. “I hear so many PAs from other schools talk about not feeling ready to practice. I keep in touch with many from my graduating class and we look back with gratitude that we were really well prepared. As Touro PAs, we stand out – especially in the surgical fields and specialties.”

The preparation she received at Touro has led Regina to become the Chief PA in a plastic surgery division, splitting her time between a clinic and operating room in addition to training and managing other PAs and NPs. “On operating days, I assist our surgeons with an extra set of hands, which can decrease anesthesia time and surgeons’ burn out.” She also appreciates the opportunity that plastic surgery provides to combine her artistic and clinical skills. “Plastic surgery is not just aesthetics; we do a lot of cancer reconstruction – such as breast or head and neck. It's incredible how we can rearrange skin and tissue to reconstruct any defects and make the patient feel and look whole again.”

She finds the same sense of satisfaction working in the clinic, collaborating with doctors and developing strong relationships with her patients. “I love that I have the opportunity to work alongside surgeons and impact our patients’ lives,” she muses. “It’s quite rewarding when patients appreciate the care I provide and see me as an extension of their doctors.” For Regina, doing such meaningful work is a truly a dream come true.
