Chana Wircberg, MD

Chana Wircberg wanted to be a healer since the time she was in middle school. “I always read science books, was always fascinated by the body and how it works and wanted to understand health. I figured if you like science, you must be a doctor.”

For undergrad, she found her way to Touro because she wanted to attend a school with a strong Jewish environment. “I really like the Jewish community and amenities on campus—and that the schedule is mindful of the Jewish holidays.”

After graduating from Touro’s Lander College of Arts and Sciences, Chana decided to continue her education at Touro’s New York Medical College (NYMC). Now in her fourth year, she’s getting valuable medical experience and enjoying her rotations—along with the unique perspectives of her classmates. “At NYMC, you meet all types of people going into the field and can see how a diverse group can use their individual personalities in interactions with patients. Each person brings something else to that interaction.”

Chana is still considering her options when it comes to specialties, but she’s also excited by the idea of internal medicine with a fellowship in hematology oncology.

“I’ve heard it said that behind every physician is a parent. My mom had cancer for 10 years before she passed away. Her oncologist was such a big part of her life and our family’s life. During that time, he made such a difference. When she died, he sent us a beautiful letter and I knew then I wanted to have that same connection with my patients and be that person in their lives,” says Chana.

“It’s fascinating all the ways we are thinking to fight cancer. I want to be a part of that, and helping people’s recovery.”

No matter which path she pursues, she’s excited about being able to support and connect with her patients during such a vulnerable time. “It’s an intimate experience—and also a big responsibility!”
