Touro's Lander College for Men
Actuarial analyst Abbie Jakubovic, a Touro Lander College for Men (LCM) alum, is now a senior associate at Mercer, a global consulting leader in talent, health, retirement and investments. “LCM prepared me for what I needed to know for the actuarial exams,” said Abbie. “The math department was great. The classes were small, and I was able to get to know a lot of the professors. Because of the low student/professor ratio, I was able to form relationships with professors who were practicing actuaries.”
These relationships, and the guidance they provided throughout Abbie’s schooling, eventually led to his first actuarial internship the summer before his graduation and after a referral by a LCM professor, who was a former chief actuary at the firm, he landed a full-time position after graduation. “He provided guidance on actuarial exams and the industry and was kind enough to be a reference. I’ll forever be grateful for the doors that opened for me.”
Abbie is also thankful to LCM for affording him the opportunity to continue studying Talmud and rabbinics while simultaneously pursuing an academic degree and career in the actuarial field.
Rising the ranks at Mercer over the past seven years, Abbie’s role has expanded to include strategic consulting across all lines of employer benefits. “On any given day, I work with my clients to balance the goals of providing their employees with a competitive benefits package, manage and improve health outcomes and strategize methods to mitigate cost inflation,” he explained.
Looking ahead to the future, Abbie is thinking about new opportunities that are less actuarial. “My five-year goal is to broaden my horizons to become the best version of a strategic consultant for all employer health and benefits needs, become a team leader and manage a full book of business. Then, I plan to pay it forward by guiding the next generation to provide them with the same opportunities that were afforded to me.”
