Motivating Patients to Quit: An Introduction to Smoking Cessation and Motivational Interviewing (CE Credits)
Tobacco use is associated with many negative health and oral effects. This program will explore various methods to assist and motivate patients to quit smoking and improve their health statuses.
Activity Objectives:
- Describe the epidemiology, pathophysiology and effects of nicotine use and cessation
- Identify appropriate medication regimens and counseling points for patients who are initiating pharmacologic interventions
- Explain motivational interviewing techniques and nonpharmacologic methods to assist with smoking cessation
About the Speaker: Dr. Joanne Son received her PharmD degree from St. John’s University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. She then completed a PGY1 pharmacy practice residency at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, NJ and a PGY2 ambulatory care pharmacy residency at The Brooklyn Hospital Center in Brooklyn, NY. She is a board-certified ambulatory care pharmacist and specializes in chronic disease state and medication management including diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and anticoagulation. Dr. Son previously worked under a collaborative practice agreement where she adjusted and initiated medication regimens to manage patients’ chronic diseases. Additionally, she provided smoking cessation services and counseling for patients seen in her clinic. Dr. Son is currently an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Touro College of Pharmacy and an Assistant Professor of Dental Medicine at Touro College of Dental Medicine. She is establishing clinical pharmacy services at Touro Dental Health where she precepts pharmacy and dental students to facilitate interprofessional education. At Touro Dental Health, she will be initiating pharmacist-led smoking cessation counseling services and pharmacy consult services where dental providers can consult her for assistance with clinical tasks including but not limited to reviewing medications or medical histories, counseling, and providing medication and dosing recommendations.
