Mission & Impact

Touro University was established with the mission to uphold the Jewish heritage, and more broadly to educate and serve, “in keeping with the historic Jewish commitment to intellectual inquiry, the transmission of knowledge, social justice, and service to society.” These enduring and compelling values of tolerance and dignity continue to infuse all our programs and make Touro an institution that appeals to and serves Jewish and non-Jewish communities alike.

Since its inception, Touro has served and supported diverse communities, making world-class educational opportunities accessible to all members of society, across all races, nations, and beliefs.

Our core values are drawn from our Jewish heritage and intellectual tradition, focusing simultaneously on individual development and the greater good. Touro provides students with superior academic programs in an environment that nurtures personal growth and intellectual inquiry and encourages service to under-resourced communities and giving back.

Our students in turn become accomplished, thoughtful citizens who share and perpetuate our belief in quality education for all, the treatment of all human beings with integrity and respect, personal and professional ethics, and the building of a responsive and responsible society.

We take pride in the foundation and principles that still define the Touro experience today: Judaic values, student-centered education, community building.

A Vibrant Jewish Tomorrow

Our founder, Dr. Bernard Lander, created Touro so Jewish students wouldn’t have to choose between observing their faith and pursuing their academic and professional goals. Touro has remained steadfast in its commitment to Jewish continuity, and to serve as a home where Jewish students can thrive as they complete their undergraduate and graduate education.

Building Strong Communities

Our commitment to social justice and equal opportunity compels us to be active partners in the communities we serve. We train all students, no matter their background, who are passionate about giving back and we design programs with community needs in mind, whether that be in education, social work, law, and especially, medicine and healthcare. Our programs and our graduates seek to strengthen and build communities from within.

Student-Centered Education

In a system that spans the United States and abroad, the hallmarks of the Touro experience remain consistent. Our commitment to providing a practical, affordable, supportive, and flexible educational environment appeals to all the student populations we serve. All Touro students receive personalized attention, build close relationships with faculty mentors and their peers, and graduate ready to embark on careers that make an impact. We put students at the heart of our education.
